Yesterday, OpenAI and Condé Nast announced a new partnership in order to expand the reach of Condé Nast’s content. Condé Nast joins other publisher partners of OpenAI such as TIME, The Atlantic, Vox Media and Financial Times. These partnerships usually allow OpenAI’s products to access and display content from the partners’ publications.

Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch announced the partnership in an internal memo saying that Condé Nast is entering a multi-year partnership in order to expand the reach of their content. Lynch brought up the challenges experienced by publishers in the last decade with the rise of technology and expressed a trust in OpenAI taking the rights of publishers seriously. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap echoes similar sentiments in OpenAI’s post on the topic saying that they are committed to working with publishers to ensure accuracy, integrity and respect of quality reporting as AI plays a larger role in news delivery and discovery.

OpenAI says they will display content from Condé Nast brands, such as Vogue, GQ and Vanity Fair, in their products and prototypes like ChatGPT and SearchGPT. In tandem with announcing the partnership OpenAI sheds light on their SearchGPT prototype. In it they are:” testing new search features that make finding information and reliable content sources faster and more intuitive”. OpenAI explains that SearchGPT has links directly to the source and that they plan to have this feature in ChatGPT in the future.

The new partnerships between certain publishers and OpenAI provide an alternative approach to issues surrounding the training and function of AI tools, compared to approaches such as that of The New York Times. The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement due to alleged use and reproduction of its publications to train OpenAI’s AI tools in 2023.
