Next June Finns specializing in scientific information have an opportunity to meet colleagues from all over the world at the summer conference of ICSTI in Helsinki

The International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI) is a non-profit international association. It focuses on interaction between organizations that create, disseminate and use scientific and technical information. The executive secretariat is located in Paris.

ICSTI actively promotes and provides a forum for the exchange of experience, expertise and understanding. It creates the opportunity for organizational networking and collaboration across the scientific and technical information (STI) communities. It also initiates programmes and projects of direct relevance to current and future scholarly communication concerns.

Exploration of and innovation in leading-edge information science and technology are among ICSTI’s key strategies. These activities are implemented through a suite of technical projects – all having finite timescales – which are managed under the auspices of ICSTI’s Technical Activities Coordinating Committee (TACC).

Broad-based membership
ICSTI is a broad-based membership organization. The over 40 members represent various organizations around the world – there are research libraries, scientific research centers, publishers, learned societies, governmental as well as international organizations.

The members come mostly from Europe and North America but also from Asian countries. The membership benefits include ICSTI Insights, a quarterly communiqué, customized to member interests or news and alert service of the latest developments in scientific information.

Voluntary collaboration in the technical projects is perceived as a unique benefit of ICSTI membership.

Annual high-level conferences
In addition to the annual general Assembly, ICSTI always arranges a summer conference in June and a winter meeting in February. The conferences are hosted by member organizations. The theme in Ottawa 2009 was ”Managing Data for Science”, next year we will meet in Beijing under the title, ’Upgrading Information to Knowledge’.

This June, the conference will be held in Helsinki. It will be jointly hosted by the Society for Finnish Information Specialists, VTT Technical Research Center of Finland and the National Board of Patents and Registration of Finland. The theme ”From Information to Innovation”, also touching IPR issues on several points, will focus on thought-provoking sub-themes:
o Information as the Lifeblood of Research and Innovation – Finnish Cases
o Intelligent Information Solutions and Services
o Creating the Future – Towards the Global Innovation Economy

See you in Helsinki in June!
